Large trees. Branchlets with enlarged nodes and circular stipular scars. Leaves leathery, broadly ovate, 8-13 cm long, 5-9 cm wide, apex acuminate, base cuneate, entire or sometimes 3-lobed, glabrous, basal veins 3-5; petiole 3-5 cm long; stipules elliptic, 2-4 cm long, hairy. Inflorescences solitary, 7—9-flowered. Flowers unisexual or bisexual, apetalous. Stamens shorter than 1 cm. Ovary semi-inferior, hairy, styles 2. Capsule ovoid, 1-1.5 cm long, tuberculate outside.
Restricted to Sunset Peak. Hainan, Guangdong, Guangxi, Yunnan, Hunan, Jiangxi, Fujian. Vietnam.
In forests. Flowering: Apr.-Aug.
This species, with a handsome tree-shape, has potential ornamental value. In Hong Kong, it has only been recorded in Sunset Peak; the locality is within Country Parks under protection. Moreover, AFCD have conducted active propagation and ex-situ conservation. A living specimen could be found in the Shing Mun Arboretum.
