Description:

Evergreen shrubs, ca. 2 m tall. Leaves opposite, leathery, elliptic-oblong or ovate, 1-2 cm long and 0.8-1.2 cm wide, apex obtuse or retuse, occasionally acute, base cuneate to subrounded, glabrous except for midrib sometimes puberulent, with scattered brown glandular dots; lateral veins 2-3 pairs, obscure or adaxially slightly raised; petiole 0-2 mm long. Panicles terminal, ca. 5 cm long; pedicel 0.5-1.5 mm long, glabrous. Calyx ca. 1.5 mm long, glabrous; Corolla 6-7 mm long; tube ca. as long as lobes. Stamens reaching apex of corolla lobes or slightly shorter. Fruit subglobose, ca. 5 mm in diam.

Sham Chung, Sam A Tsuen, Sam A Chung. Vietnam.

Habitat and Ecology:

Flowering: Jun.-Aug.; fruiting: Aug.-Oct.

This species was first discovered in Chung Mei in the Hong Kong New Territories in 1929, but not in any other part of China. Some localities of occurrence are in Country Parks under protection. AFCD have been actively propagating this plant and reintroduced the species into natural habitats. Ex-situ conservation has also been carried out and living specimens are cultivated in the Shing Mun Arboretum.
