Evergreen trees, 7-12 m tall; branches of current year, petioles, and rachis of inflorescence tawny tomentose. Leaves thinly leathery, lanceolate, 6-11 cm long and 2-3 cm wide, with tufts of minute crisp hairs on both srufaces when young, margin entire; lateral nerves 6-9 on each side. Male inflorescence paniculate; female inflorescence spicate, with cupules of 3 in clusters. Cupule bowl-shaped, 6-8 mm long, 15-20 mm in diam., enclosing basal part of nut. Nut broadly conical to depressed globose, 1.3-1.5 cm long, 1.5-1.7 cm in diam., glabrous.
Tai Tam and Ma On Shan. There were previous records (1906-1930) from Mount Cameron and Aberdeen of Hong Kong Island. W Guangdong and E Guangxi.
In broadleaved evergreen forest on stream banks. Flowering: July-Aug.; fruiting: Oct.-Nov. of the following year.
The species is endemic to China and has a fragmented and restricted distribution range. Timber extraction occurs elsewhere for its hard wood, which is suitable for making furniture. In Hong Kong, all localities of its occurrence are within Country Parks under protection.
