Description:

Evergreen trees, up to 20 m. high. Young twigs and buds reddish brown pubescent. Leaves alternate, leathery, narrowly elliptic-obovate or oblanceolate, 8-17 cm long and 2.5-5.5 cm wide, apex acute, base cuneate, margin slightly involute; petiole 1-3 cm long, stipular scars semi-elliptic, 3-4 mm long. Flowers terminal and solitary, pedicels 0.6-1.8 cm long, reddish brown pubescent; tepals 9, white, outer 3 thinly leathery, oblong-elliptic, 6-7 cm long, inner 2 whorls smaller, usually fleshy, obovate, 5-6 cm long; stamens many, ca. 1 cm long. Aggregate red, ovoid, 2-5 cm long; follicles with dot-protuberance on exposed side, apex with a short beak.

Distribution:

Victoria Peak, Ma On Shan, Tai Mo Shan, Sunset Peak. Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi, Guizhou, Yunnan.

Habitat and Ecology:

In forests on hills. Flowering: May; Fruiting: Oct.

The large white flower makes it an attractive ornamental. In Hong Kong, all localities of its occurrence are in Country Parks under protection. The species has been listed under the Forestry Regulations (Cap. 96 sub. leg.).
